The story of the Chimera

The “Chimera” is a monster in Greek mythology who spits fire Also described in the Iliad.
A group of Etruscan artisans of the fifth century in the Arezzo area reproduced the Chimera in a bronze statue and buried it to preserve its status, then found in 1553 During the construction of the Medici’s fortifications.
The Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo I de ‘Medici Claimed it for His collection Exhibited and it publicly for a period in the lobby Leo X in Palazzo Vecchio. Subsequently it was Transferred to the Grand Duke’s study in the Palazzo Pitti as reported in His biography of Benvenuto Cellini.
In the seventeenth century, thanks to the finding of the tail by Giorgio Vasari, it was restored back to its original form.
In 1718 it was Transported to the Uffizi Gallery and subsequently moved at the Palazzo della Crocetta, now the Archaeological Museum of Florence.
