The story of the Marzocco
The “Marzocco” was the lion symbol of popular power in the Middle Ages. The statue was commissioned to Donatello from the Florentine Republic at the beginning of 1400 in honor of Pope Martin V visiting Florence. It was destined to decorated the papal apartments in Santa Maria Novella, then it was moved in Piazza della Signoria and the original is now in the Museo del Bargello while in the square remains a exact copy.
Donatello’s Marzocco is a lion in “pietra serena” depicted while resting His paw on a shield, not randomly, representing the emblem and ancient symbol of Florence: the Florentine Lily or Lily BOTTONATO.
